The short answer is YES! As with any job, task, or duty, your options can include learning the craft, attend video seminars on YouTube, provide your valuable time, invest in needed protections, get up to speed on laws/rules, and find out what is customary to name just a few.
I once fixed my own dishwasher. After figuring out what the issue was, I started on the long "journey" to "save some money".... I began with ordering the part (I thought was the culprit) on-line. After several orders (and reorders! ugg), I finally found the right part, but that was only part of the ordeal. Here are the steps I went through:
Diagnose problem/issue and come up with a plan- was I correct in the problem?
Schedule time away from family and friends to work on the issue- Did I schedule enough time? maybe...not sure--- I have never done this task.
Get tools ready- do you have the right tools? If not, invest in tools.
Order the part -is it the right part? Not sure.
Wait for part to arrive-Do I have the time? likely not...
Discover if the part is correct- how do I know?
Reorder part- More Time!
Wait for part- Even More Time!
Disassemble dishwasher- issues and time
Install part
Assemble dishwasher.
Check for leaks- Oh no! Leaks!
Disassemble washer
Fix leak- More time
Reassemble washer
Test- leaking again- now a different area! what! didn't plan for that!
Fix new leak
Reassemble washer
Test functionality
Phew! Sit back and relax-- I saved a whopping $100.00! Congrats to ME!
Sometimes "doing it yourself" makes sense. More times then not, it costs you valuable time, money, frustrations, and overall hassle (as well as premature grey hairs). This is just a reminder to take your time when asking yourself whether you should hire a professional or do it yourself. Experience matters! Hire someone that has "been there done that". Put your ego aside and let the professionals do their job. It's a valuable lesson.
